When I was a kid, I thought Beauty School was a place where you went to be beautiful, inside and out. That’s because my mom always said it was important to have a beautiful spirit and be beautiful inside. Well, school is school, but wouldn’t it be nice if you could pick your chosen profession and study directly for that?
You can, of course, and that’s why there are plenty of
doctors, lawyers, and accountants out there. But you don’t have to go to
college for eight years to study and graduate from a Beauty School or a Medical
Esthetics program.
That’s exciting news since careers in the Beauty Industry
are plentiful right now and pay much more than minimum wage jobs. If you’ve got
a fast food or similar position, it’s great to pay the bills (or at least some
of them, I know), and if you want to move into management, that’s great too.
Still, what if you want to help people and make a difference in their world?
Medical Aestheticians Work in Doctor’s Offices
To work as a Medical Aesthetician, you’ve got to attend an
accredited esthetics school with classroom time taught by licensed and
certified professionals who provide excellent hands-on technology and laser
training. That combo, mixed with a great facility and staff, can take you to
your dreams.
According to Courtney Short, owner
of Desert Glow Aesthetics, she gravitated naturally towards the medical field,
becoming a Medical Assistant and Phlebotomist at just 18, but she wanted more.
She wanted to “Pursue the corrective solutions side of things, be results-driven,
and become an acne specialist.”
No matter where you live (Courtney did move from California
to attend IMAj Institute in Scottsdale, AZ), there are schools and courses in
beauty and medical aesthetics. You can expect to pay $13,000 to $15,000 for a
600-hour, 19-week course in Advanced Aesthetics or more if you want to be a
Certified Laser Technologist, but the choice is yours.
And when you’re done, you’ll have the option to work for a
school, in a spa, or even a doctor’s office – for pretty good pay!
If you’d prefer to attend a Beauty School or Cosmetology
School for a career in makeup or as a nail technician or hairstylist will
likely take twice as long to finish as a course in aesthetics. Your costs will
vary but expect 1400 to 1600 hours and up to $20,000+.
Again, there are a lot of choices out there. Make sure you
connect with the teachers and professionals at the school you are considering,
check their standing in the community, and find out how well their students do
on both the accreditation program (pass/fail) and the state boards to be
certified!
